Writer Profile for John McNay
John McNayTorrance, Scotland
I live with my wife in Torrance, a small village, north of Glasgow in the central belt of Scotland.
I took early retirement in 2003 after a 36 year career as a cartographic surveyor & senior manager with Ordnance Survey, the UK national mapping agency.
I’ve always liked working with wood & ‘turning seemed a good route to take when retirement allowed me time to spare.
I did some initial training with Jimmy Clewes but from then on it has been self taught. I do all kinds of turnings but am best known for pen making & coloured platters which I sell at craft fairs & by word of mouth.
I am a committee member for Strathclyde Woodturners having recently passed on the role of club programmer & taken on the library & tool hire.
I am a member of the AWGB & demonstrate at our club from time to time.
