Apex, NC, USA

I’ve lived in Apex, NC since 1994. A hobbyist woodworker for 20 years, I was a late arrival to woodturning.

In 2006, I built a grandfather clock from plans that called for reeded half-columns on the front of the clock frame. Never one to shy away from a chance to buy tools, I purchased a Jet mini lathe with a bed extension, and took an introductory woodturning class from Alan Leland. Once the clock was finished, I put the lathe back in the box. In 2016, I got the lathe out and began learning how to turn pepper mills and Christmas ornaments. That, of course, led to bowls, goblets, candlesticks, toys, platters, etc.

In January 2017, I joined the Woodturners Guild of North Carolina and the AAW.

While attending a Symposium in Franklin, Tennessee, I met Frank Penta who was a featured demonstrator, and discovered that he lived only 25 miles from me. I became one of “Frank’s Friday Guys”, the students that he began mentoring from his home shop.

In January 2018, I joined the Chapel Hill Woodturners.

I enjoy woodturning of all types, and embrace the challenges of creating laminated blanks which reveal intricate patterns when turned.
