Allen, Texas

I am originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada but moved Allen, Texas in 1997. I am happily married to my wife Shelly and have a daughter who is now making a life for herself. I am an electrical engineer that had worked in the telecom industry for over 23 years. I now own and operate the Woodturning Tool Store, an online retailer dedicated to providing quality tools and equipment to the wood turning community.

I started woodworking in the early 1990’s making furniture and built-in cabinets for our home. I bought my first lathe in 2002 and was self taught for the first couple of years. I then got involved with the Dallas Area Woodturners club (an American Association of Woodturners affiliate) which was a big help in exposing me to all kinds of turning and training.

Over the next few years I attended turning class taught by Al Stirt, Don Derry, and Jimmy Clewes. These classes and training really helped with my turning skills but just as important I acquired knowledge about form, function and how the wood grain and texture guides the turning decisions.

I developed skills in hollow forms, bowls, boxes, drinking vessels, simple spindle projects and a variety of other forms. I develop my skills every time at the lathe by using every cut as a practice cut. As I look through the history of my turnings I see that I enjoy the process just about as much as the finished item. I also enjoy the immediate spontaneity of wood turning. It only takes a small amount of time to complete a turned project; however, some finishing aspects of the piece can take much longer. I look forward to new challenges and becoming a better woodturner and artist each day.
