Writer Profile for Donald Lindsley
Donald LindsleyE. Setauket, NY
I picked up my interest in woodturning from my father, whose lathe I inherited. Largely self-taught, I began turning seriously in 1994 when I was Chair of my Department and needed therapy. I work mainly in local woods (especially black walnut, cherry, red cedar, black locust, Norway maple, and yew) to make wood bowls, vases, candlesticks, and other objects. My goal is to unlock the beauty of the wood while creating a pleasing shape.
I am a member of the American Association of Woodturners , and currently serve on the board of directors of the Long Island Woodturners Association. In daylight, I'm a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geosciences at Stony Brook University.
