John Tarpley

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

John lives and works in Gatlinburg, Tennessee at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Since this is a tourist area he specializes in making items that appeal to the area’s visitors and items that he just enjoys making. He does both plain turning and ornamental turning using a Lindow Rose Engine.

John began turning while he was living in southern California and employed in research for a biotechnology company. He retired and returned home to Tennessee where he and his wife, Jean, operate Turned & Other Treasures, a small wholesale craft business. They work to preserve and continue the tradition of local arts and crafts. John’s work includes wood, and alternative turning materials. He makes some purely artistic pieces, but mainly chooses to make functional items. He believes that functional items can also be decorative and show artistic vision.

John has exhibited and demonstrated in galleries and shows in California and Tennessee. He also enjoys teaching groups and individual students. Commissions are a favorite project especially those that involve creating items that are used as awards, gifts, or as special recognitions.
