2019 Turning to the Future Competition announced

The AAW has issued a call for student submissions for its 2019 Turning to the Future competition. This exhibition is held in conjunction with Fresh Wood, a student competition sponsored by the AWFS® (Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers). There are two divisions in the Turning to the Future competition: High School and Post-Secondary, with three categories each: Functional, Small Turnings, and Open. Five finalists in each division category will be chosen to have their work displayed at the 2019 AWFS® fair in Las Vegas, Nevada, July 17-20, 2019. The application period opens March 1, 2019 and the deadline for submissions is May 1, 2019. For more information, visit tiny.cc/Calls.


Call for Entries: AAW’s 2019 Themed Member Exhibition

The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) has announced an open juried call for its 2019  member exhibition called "Continuum". The entry period is January 1, 2019 through March 4, 2019. Artists will be notified by March 30, 2019. The exhibition is open to any AAW member and to full-time students in art, design, or industry-related degree programs. All types of turnings are welcome: sculptural, functional, segmented, ornamental, green-turned, traditional, etc.


Wood Art Capital of Oklahoma

Did you know that the Forest Heritage Center Museum (a division of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry) located in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, was officially designated as the “Wood Art Capital of Oklahoma”? We didn’t either!


New Research regarding Wood Rot

According to a recent report on sciencedaily.com, a new study shows that black fungi on oiled wood can behave like a 'biofinish'. This layer colors the wood and protects it from wood rot and degradation by sunlight. An additional advantage: the fungus automatically repairs damage in the protective layer. The article further states:

Chicago Woodturners at SOFA 2018

As they have in the past, the Chicago Woodturners hosted turning demonstrations at the 2018 Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) Fair in Chicago. This fair is the world-famous premier gallery-presented art fair dedicated to three-dimensional art and design.
